Shirley & Leo:
Staying Connected Through Compassion
When Shirley suffered a serious fall at home, everything changed. She was hospitalized and then moved into a rehabilitation center. At the time, she was living alone with her faithful companion, a 16-year-old beagle named Leo.
Neighbors stepped in to help. They made sure Leo had food and was let out, but none were able to fully care for him. Some had pets of their own, others had demanding schedules. Meanwhile, Leo remained alone in the house, confused and mourning the absence of the person he loved most.
As concerns grew about Shirley’s cognitive health and her ability to return home, it became clear that a long-term solution was needed.
A neighbor contacted Houston Beagle Rescue, and because Leo was a Beagle, he was accepted into the program and placed at the Beagle Bungalow, a sanctuary for senior dogs. There, he received loving care and a calm, safe environment. But this was never just about finding shelter for an aging dog. The connection between Shirley and Leo still mattered deeply.
With care and coordination, Leo was brought to Shirley’s assisted living facility for regular visits. These moments were filled with joy, comfort, and familiarity. Seeing Leo brought peace to Shirley’s heart, and for Leo, the visits brought reassurance and love.
This story shows that separation doesn’t have to mean goodbye. Sometimes, people simply need support to remain connected to the pets they love. With the right help, that bond can continue to bring healing, even in the midst of change. Programs like Paws 4 Christ exist to offer that kind of bridge, one built on compassion, dignity, and love.
Sharon & Squeaky: A Testament to the Need
Sharon found Squeaky on the side of a highway in South Carolina, alone, scared, and in need of care. Without hesitation, she scooped her up, took her to a vet, and made sure she had everything she needed. Then she continued her journey to Texas, with Squeaky now riding beside her as family.
From that day on, they were inseparable. The time they shared was enough to build a deep and loving bond. Squeaky wasn’t just a pet. She was Sharon’s companion, her comfort, and her family.
But life took a devastating turn when Sharon was diagnosed with cancer. As the illness progressed and her strength faded, Sharon held on to Squeaky for as long as she possibly could. With immense love and heartbreaking courage, she made the painful decision to surrender her to Beagle Rescue. She wanted to make sure Squeaky would be safe and loved in a new home while she still had the strength to say goodbye.
Sharon was fortunate. Squeaky’s breed gave her a path to safety. In Texas, many beloved pets are not so lucky. Without a plan in place, mixed breeds or those without a breed-specific rescue may end up in overcrowded shelters or face euthanasia. That reality is part of what drives the mission of Paws 4 Christ: to ensure that no pet is left behind and no owner is left without peace of mind.
It was a final act of love, full of sorrow and grace. Sharon gave Squeaky the same care in parting that she had shown from the very beginning.

Murl & Dahlia:
Quiet Faithfulness in Life’s Fragile Moments
Murl and his dog, Dahlia, shared a quiet, steady companionship. She was always by his side ~ faithful, gentle, and completely devoted. Their bond was deep and unmistakable, woven into the rhythm of daily life.
One afternoon, we noticed an ambulance parked outside Murl and Goi’s house. As their neighbors and friends, we knew this was serious. We soon learned Murl had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was being rushed to the hospital. Goi, his wife, went with him, facing long days of uncertainty and heartbreak at his bedside.
We didn’t want her to carry the added burden of worrying about Dahlia, so we stepped in. While Murl fought to recover, we made sure Dahlia was safe, comforted, and cared for. Her world had been disrupted, but we did our best to keep her routines familiar and her heart at ease.
Days later, when Murl finally regained consciousness, his very first words to Goi were, “Where is Dahlia?”
That simple question spoke volumes.
Dahlia wasn’t just a pet she was his family. She was home. Their connection, even through crisis, remained unbroken.
This is the kind of love we see time and again. Unexpected emergencies leave beloved pets in sudden need of care, and their people longing for peace of mind. That’s why Paws 4 Christ exists, to step in during these difficult moments, offering help, comfort, and Christ-like compassion to both pets and their people.
Amy, Gilly, & Remi:
When Caring Isn’t Enough on Its Own
In December, I met Gilly and Remi, two sweet Beagles left behind after their owner, Amy, passed away. It was clear that Amy had deeply loved her girls, and I have no doubt they brought her comfort in her final months. But when I arrived to pick them up, it was evident that things had become difficult.
Their nails were overgrown, they were behind on vaccinations, and Remi had a torn kneecap that had gone untreated. It broke my heart, not because Amy didn’t care, but because she was simply too ill to keep up with their needs. Her love for them never faded, but her strength did.
That moment revealed something powerful. Even the most devoted pet owners can reach a point where their ability to care no longer matches their desire to. And it is in that vulnerable space, where love still exists but the ability to act on it fades, that Paws 4 Christ is meant to step in.
Amy’s story is a reminder that this mission is not just about helping the animals. It is about honoring the bond between people and their pets. It is about offering peace of mind to those nearing the end of life and ensuring their beloved companions are cared for with compassion, dignity, and love.

Sweeney & Higgins:
A Testament to Why Paws 4 Christ Exists
When Sweeney and Higgins’ owner was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, his out-of-state family reached out in desperation. Their hearts were heavy not only from the diagnosis, but from the realization that their loved one could no longer care for his cherished dogs.
Sweeney, already sixteen, had significant health issues. Higgins, at ten, still had many good years ahead. The Beagle Rescue was able to step in. Higgins was eventually adopted by a new family, and Sweeney became a permanent foster, spending his golden years surrounded by love.
But what if help had arrived sooner?
What if compassionate volunteers had been available when the owner first fell ill, ready to walk the dogs, assist with daily care, or bring them to visit as he adjusted to assisted living?
What if local fosters had kept Sweeney and Higgins nearby, offering comfort through regular visits during that difficult transition?
These are the “what ifs” that Paws 4 Christ was created to answer.
By connecting trained volunteers and foster families with individuals experiencing illness, aging, or life’s unexpected turns, we work to preserve the powerful bond between people and their pets. Because love like theirs should not be lost in times of crisis. It should be honored, protected, and supported.
